The ammount of paint you need will vary depending on the size of your vehicle. for smaller cars, around 2 litres should be enough. Medium sizes saloon stlye vehicles may need a little more - between 2.5 and 3 litres, Larger people carriers will use around 3 to 3.5 litres, and in the case of 4x4 vehicles, around 4 litres should be sufficient.

Brush selection is basically broken down in several factors:

Paint type to be applied
Size of project

There are two different bristle types: Synthetic and Natural. The synthetic variety are far more durable than a standard natural bristle brush, and due to the way they are manufactured they do not absorb vast quantities of water, which leads to swelling in natural brushes.

Natural bristle brushes are far more absorbent, and they can produce satisfactory results with any solvent based paints, however, they may not be so well suited to water-based paints.

In regards to the size of project, always follow the same general working ethic :- use a larger brush (between 2”-3”) for the main areas of the room, whilst using a smaller brush (1”-2”) for the more precise areas such as skirting boards and door surrounds.

Rollers are an excellent solution for larger areas and in the most case can create a quick and easy painting solution. Much like brushes there are differing types of rollers – Mohair, sheepskin and foam.

The rollers can also vary in width, which can directly impact the finish in which the roller produces. Shorter width rollers are perfect for lighter paints such as silk emulsion, whereas the wider width rollers are more suited for thicker paints such as matt emulsion.

Foam rollers are ideal for touch ups, smaller jobs, and ceilings. They don’t tend to spatter the paint although they are not recommended for textured surfaces, and when using foam rollers try not to use them in conjunction with standard emulsions, as their spongy properties create pockets of air in the film of paint on the roller itself, which when applied and gone un-noticed, creates an un-even, bubbly surface. These bubbles can also pop, leaving an unsightly and uneven finish.

There are plenty of environmentally friendly methods to disposing of unwanted or left over paints. Reuse leftover paint by resealing the tin it came in, or alternatively you can donate it to a local community project.

Disposal may seem too many as a waste, but at the same time they do not want unsightly paint tins lying around. This can be prevented by carefully planning how much paint you will actually need for your project. Most contracted builders can estimate this for you or you can find a paint calculator online.

When painting a room, the most advisable process is to go from the top to the bottom. Startwith your ceilings first, then apply paint to the walls, from top to bottom. Then for the finishing touches, paint the skirting boards and doors.

Yes and no – it can work, but the silk will either have to be thoroughly abraded and has lost its natural sheen, or you will have to sand down the entire surface before applying any new layers of paint, otherwise the new top layer will be highly susceptible to cracking.

Air spraying can be tricky if you are inexperienced. Always try to keep the nozzle pointing Face-on with the wall, and always try and maintain the distance between the nozzle itself and the wall. If the nozzle is angled up or down, the distribution of the paint to the surface will be uneven. Another good practice is to always spray in horizontal lines, and to move yourself along the wall, rather than moving your arm left and right in an arc, as this affects the even distribution of the paint.
